HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR HVAC SYSTEM WITH A PET

Even pet urine, hair, and dander can have a significant impact on your HVAC system. Your HVAC system may burn out sooner than expected if it is improperly maintained. Here’s how to maintain your HVAC system if you own a pet and are a homeowner.

HVAC Maintenance Tips

1. Replace your air filter regularly

Air filters are one of the best tools to clean the air flowing through your ducts. Your HVAC air filters can remove allergens and particles such as hair, dander, and dander that affect the indoor air quality of your home. If you don’t replace your HVAC filter, your HVAC system will have to work harder to perform its duties.

If you have pets, you may need to change your HVAC filter more frequently. Check the air filter often and replace it if it appears dirty.

2. Keep your dog away from the condenser

The dog will choose a favorite spot to urinate. Imagine that your dog’s preferred spot is on the condenser of the air conditioner. The condenser could corrode and rust because of the acidity in dog urine.

Keep your dog far away from your condenser. It would help if you built a fence to keep your dog away from the condenser. To ensure proper airflow, keep the fence at least 2 feet from the condenser.

Install a chain link fence if the fence is close to the condenser. This will allow air to flow around the condenser. If you don’t allow enough air to flow around the condenser, it could work too hard. This could lead to an air conditioner that is prematurely damaged.

3. Cleaning Ducts Frequently

You may have noticed that pet dander settles in your carpeting, upholstery, and even under your bed. Did you know that pet dander could also cover the interior of your air ducts? This can seriously impact your indoor air. If your ducts get dirty, your HVAC system can also make your house dirty.

Additionally, dirty ducts may cause your HVAC air filter to get dirty more quickly than usual. Regularly cleaning your HVAC ducts can help maintain a more efficient system. It will also prevent the air filter of your HVAC from becoming prematurely dirty.

Unsure if you need to clean your air ducts? Remove the vent cover and look inside. If your house becomes dusty while the HVAC system runs, you’ll know your ducts need cleaning.

4. Bathe your pet and clean up your house often

Keep your house clean to keep pet dander from entering the air ducts of your home and the HVAC system. Vacuum and sweep the floors frequently. When you see that the bed cover is covered with hair, wash it.

Bathe your dog regularly to avoid dander or pet hair floating in the air. Brush or comb your pet’s fur and clean the brush of your pet regularly.

Overbathing can cause your pet’s skin to dry out. Consult your veterinarian about how often you should bathe your pet. Reduce baths if your pet has sensitive fur and more frequently brush their coat.

5. Seal your Ducts

Your ducts could become dirty inside if you have holes in them. This can be prevented by sealing the ducts. You can seal duct leaks using duct mastic. Inspect the ducts located in your attic, basement, or crawlspace. Install mastic wherever the ducts have cracks and the interior is exposed.

Do not use duct tape, despite its name. It tends to break down quickly. You can hire an HVAC contractor to seal your ducts if you are not comfortable doing it yourself.

6. Get regular tune-ups

Regularly tuning up your HVAC system can ensure that pet dander and hair are removed from the system. Your HVAC contractor in Myrtle Beach will also check the efficiency of your system, remove allergens, and clean up pet debris. They will let you know whether your HVAC system requires any repairs.
